Gear To Get You Through Winter In Houston

wp-1473774907071.jpgToday I'm joining the lovely ladies for Tuesdays On The Run.  Where we talk about a different topic each week that is running related.

Today's topic is "Favorite Winter Gear".  I don't have much winter gear as I'm blessed to live in Houston which has a very mild winter.  So mild that I don't put away my summer gear!

I see snaps of my Instagram friends in colder climates and I'm happy I don't have to bundle up so much.  I have lost whatever tolerance for the cold from living in Kansas about a year after I moved to Houston.

I always look at the nice, warm looking running jackets when they come out in late summer/early fall... but I really have no need for those. I try to keep my winter gear spending pretty low, since I wear that stuff so rarely.  It is really the short/tanks/carpis/lightweight long sleeves where my money goes.

I have a few things in my arsenal for when the weather gets downright cold ... in Houston, that is in the lower 40's-30's (sometimes but rarely 20's):

  • BCG Cold Weather long sleeve shirts... I have 2.  These are really thick and keep me warm.  I think they are similar to the UA Cold Gear stuff at a fraction of the price.

  • Spandits! thermal tights. I have one pair... would love to have more as they do keep me toasty warm.   Weather cold enough to run in them doesn't really stick around here for longer than a couple of days.

  • Half zip pull-over.... I think I got this at Wal-Mart.

  • Spandits! trekkie hat... this thing is awesome.  When I got it I was skeptical whether it would help keep me warm (it's made from the same fabric as the regular bottoms), but after wearing it on the run... I LOVE it! It keeps the heat in but is so lightweight you don't even know you have a hat on.

What items do you need to survive the winter?

Does your winter get colder than mine?

  1. Ha! Um yes, we're a little colder here in Chicago. Bundling up is such a chore sometimes it's easier to fire up the mill for shorter runs. I need to try one of those hats!

  2. I'm lucky - it doesn't get cold in California. So I have normal running tights that keep me warm enough. I get by with light longsleeved running shirts, or t-shirts with a light running jacket or light hoodie.
Right now I'm in Canada though! I had to borrow some long john's from my mom to put over my running tights and layered a t-shirt under a long-sleeved, under a running jacket. It worked ok haha ;)

  3. My weather is about the same as yours, so I don't have a lot of cold weather gear. I usually switch from shorts to pants and tanks to long sleeves. Sometimes, I need a jacket, but those days are rare, and like in Houston, don't last too long. Yay!

  5. I'm always having to borrow clothes when I go back home to KS in the winter or early spring!
