Chicago Marathon Training - Week 10

I'm recapping the past week of training for the Chicago Marathon.  This was Chicago Marathon Training - Week 10 in the training cycle. I've got 6 weeks of training left!

This week was a cut back week, and I managed to get in 3 of my runs (I missed my long run of 10 miles due to the arrival of Harvey). I got in one strength training session.

I was pleased with my eating this week as well, noshing on Roasted Vegetable Salad with Chimichurri for lunch most of the week.

On a serious note... I am surviving through the tropical deluge that Harvey continues to bring us.  My family is safe, dry, and has power at this time, we have a ways to go before we are out of harms way.  The scenes from Houston are grim and quite frightening. My area has received over 24 inches so far, with parts of Houston getting over 30... and rain is still falling.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 10:

Monday - Rest.

Tuesday - 4 miles easy + 6 strideouts

Wednesday - 7 miles easy

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 9

I'm recapping the past week of training for the Chicago Marathon.  This was Chicago Marathon Training - Week 9 in the training cycle. I'm over halfway through my training plan! Chicago is under 50 days away!

To tell the truth, I was living in fear of this week... every workout on my plan seemed hard, and just looking at the week made me doubt myself.  I took this week by the horns and rocked them all.  I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't looking forward to my cutback week coming up next week.

This week, I also ran a 10k on Saturday (recap coming soon)... my plan had a hard effort 6 miles the day before my long run.  The only way I knew I could make that happen was to find a race and race it. I had a great time, but boy was it a steam bath!  By the time I had finished, my shoes were literally squishing!

I decided to break up my long run this week.  The past few ones I've been at the breaking point during the last couple miles and needing to take walking breaks more of…

Goals for Lake Houston 10k

Tomorrow I will be running in the Lake Houston 10k in Kingwood, TX.

Today, as the temperature climbed to 100, I was questioning my sanity for (a) racing in mid-August in Houston and (b) training for a fall marathon in Houston. This matched up with my training schedule as I am supposed to do a "fast" 6 miles before my long run for the week.

I've never ran this race before or in the Kingwood area.  I'm hoping for a fairly flat course and some "lake cooled" breezes.  As usual, I've got some goals to share, these are my 5 goals for Lake Houston 10k.

5 Goals for Lake Houston 10k

Respect the distance.
Stay hydrated!
Time goals:  A - 1:00, B - 1:05, C - 1:10.
Progressive splits.
Have fun!!

Do you make goals for races other than time goals?

I'm linking up with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 linkup!

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 8

I'm recapping the past week of training for the Chicago Marathon.  This was Chicago Marathon Training - Week
8 in the training cycle. I'm halfway through my training plan! Chicago is less than 2 months away!

As I have been for the majority of this training cycle, 75% of my workouts have been on the treadmill.  I had a speed work session and a tempo run this week, as the heat and humidity haven't eased up, I take to the treadmill early in the am before work. My long runs have been the only weekly run I've done outdoors, and by the end, I'm spent.

This week I was battling a bit of exhaustion, so I took a couple extra rest days. I kept up with my running workouts, but the cross training and strength went by the wayside.
Chicago Marathon Training - Week 8:
Monday - Rest.

Tuesday - 1 mile w/up & c/down, 12 x .25 mile at 5k pace with 0.2 mile recovery

Wednesday - Rest.

Thursday - 1 mile w/up & c/down, 2 x 2 mile at 10k pace with 3 minute recovery

Friday - 5 miles easy.

Chicago Marathon Training - Week 7

I'm recapping the past week of training for the Chicago Marathon.  This was Chicago Marathon Training - Week
7 in the training cycle. This week had some challenging workouts!

As I have been for the majority of this training cycle, 75% of my workouts have been on the treadmill.  I had 2 different speed work sessions this week, and I know that there would have been no way to meet those paces outdoors without keeling over from heat stroke.

Everything seems to be clicking together for me on this training cycle.  I have put forth an effort to eat cleaner, I am getting in my cross-training and strength training each week.  I've just got to keep pushing through and continuing the forward progress!
Chicago Marathon Training - Week 7:
Monday - 1 mile w/up & c/down 7x.50 mi at 5k pace with 0.1 mi recovery

Tuesday - 30 minutes on recumbant bike; strength session focusing on bi's, tri's, shoulders, glutes, and quads; 1:00 plank.

Wednesday - 1 mile w/up & c/down, 4 miles at 10k pa…

5 Favorite Races

Chevron Houston Marathon.  The Houston Marathon was my first marathon.  It really is a blast and it runs through some really great parts of Houston.  Course support is stellar and there are tons of people cheering you on along the course.  I had so much fun, I signed up to run it again.  You can read my recap about it here.
Running With The Cows.  I have ran this half marathon the past two years, in fact I had so much fun in 2016 I planned my trip back home around this race.  The course is not easy, but the friendly volunteers and fresh country air make up for it, plus the HUGE buffet at the finish line. Check out my 2016 recap and my 2017 recap.
Brazos Bend 50.  This is a great trail run... perfect for beginners as it is flat and the trails are wide.  There are a variety of distances t…
