Adding mileage

Feels like I finally got to add some mileage to my LSD (long slow distance) run for the week.

How does that make me feel?

Ok... so it was 6 miles... I'm happy I reached this milestone ... and I'm going to bask in the moment for awhile (or at least on my rest day).

Missing out on a run...

I've missed out on 2 of my regularly scheduled runs and a make-up run and I'm really feeling down in the dumps!  Does this happen to anyone else?

Thursday night I was scheduled to run 4 miles, but right before I put on my running clothes, the heavens opened up and there was lots of thunder and lightening. My "safety officer" called off my run.  Ok, I thought... I can make up the run the next day, I did some yoga.

On Friday evening I was watching the radar... things were firing up, I changed quickly to head out the door 30 minutes early and wouldn't you know it, it started to storm! Feeling defeated, I decided to break out the "12 Minute Athlete" app on my phone and do a 16 minute HIIT (high intensity interval training). The random workout I got seemed to focus mostly on my legs, I felt fine until the next morning and all those muscles that you use when you do squats just came to life!

Saturday was 3 miles + strides day... I was able to pull that one off wi…

Product Review - Running Buddy

Running Buddy - Buddy Pouch 6+

I run with a dog and a phone, neither are negotiable to run without.  On super hot days when I need to carry a water bottle, I struggled with how to hold my phone.  I have a super large phone (the Note 2) and was not interested in an arm band, and I wasn't too excited about wearing a belt.  I found out about the Running Buddy - Buddy Pouch from a web search and dove into the reviews.  Most everything I read stated that it worked with no bounce, no chafe and kept the phone sweat free.  I found that they had a size to fit large phones so I ordered up.

I absolutely love this thing!

It fits my phone with otterbox case and it has another pocket where I can put id, key and little cash... it may even fit a gel or 2.  I had read some reviews where the pouch still bounced, and was concerned that it would bounce with the type of shorts I wear. The directions for the pouch states to wear on a flat part of yo…

Man, it's hot out there...

This week in Houston we are experiencing near record highs during the day... with our humidity, that makes it super steamy.  Each day this week so far, we've had heat advisory warnings.  While I would prefer being warm to being cold... this is HOT!

The heat can really be harmful to you... dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke are not things to take lightly.  What would happen if you were out on a solo run and that happened?

Several precautions can be taken to minimize any impact the heat may cause to you.  I feel that I have acclimated my body to working out in the extreme heat.  These are a few things that I do to help .

Run when it is cooler out... this means getting up at the @ss crack of dawn or running in the evenings.  I'm not a morning person, so I'm getting out for my runs around 7:00 or 7:30 in the evening.
Start slow... as the temperature outside increases, refrain from adding mileage or time to your outside workouts too quickly.  Take it back a notch and do som…

I did it!!!

I finished my first 5k! The Southern Star Brewing Co. 5k presented by Run in Texas was a success. I was able to surpass my goal time and even scored 8th in my age division and was the 36th female finisher overall. I am even more excited and motivated for my running journey!!  This was a small race... approximately 370 finishers, a nice size to get my feet wet and get my confidence up!

Let's get to the race recap...

I arrived up at Southern Star around 7ish. It was a nice cool morning by Houston standards, in the low 70s!  I needed to pick up my packet with my bib and timing chip so I checked in and then strolled back out to the car to put away the stuff I didn't need and then proceeded to stretch, walk, and mentally prepare myself for the task ahead.  Took some snaps of around the starting area as I had plenty of time on my hands!
